Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-1893): Piano Concerto No 1 in B flat minor op. 23
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958): Symphony No. 5 in D major
One of the most popular piano works in classical music is Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with its
colorful melodies and virtuoso soloist performances. Zlata Chochieva visits the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra for
the first time and Jessica Cottis is welcomed back to the conductor’s podium. There will also be Ralph Vaughan
Williams’ magnificent Symphony No 5.

Well-known tones

Tchaikovsky’s dramatic and heartfelt Piano Concerto No. 1 is one of the most popular piano concertos.
Its powerful opening is recognizable, while the concerto’s middle movement is influenced by a French folk song
and the work’s dancing and rhythmically challenging ending is brilliant.

Compared to the giants

Hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the most extraordinary
artists of her generation, Zlata Chochieva performs on concert stages around the world.

Her piano playing has been compared to that of Sergei Rachmaninov and Martha Argerich, and she has received
several major awards for her music.

Composed during war

British composer Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony is one of his best-loved works.
Composed during the Second World War, the symphony is beautiful and peaceful despite its period.
Its premiere in 1943 at the London Proms Festival was an instant success.

Acclaimed conductor

Award-winning and in-demand conductor Jessica Cottis makes a long-awaited return visit to lead
the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra in this spring concert. She grew up on her family’s sheep farm in south-eastern
Australia and developed a lifelong passion for nature and music at an early age.

Cottis has established herself as a highly sought-after conductor worldwide, acclaimed for her calm and
unique leadership. She is currently Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Canberra Symphony
Orchestra.
