Concert introduction 6:20–6:40 PM
For the first time, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra welcomes Magnus Fryklund, a rising star among Swedish conductors. He opens the concert with Felix Mendelssohn’s wonderful overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
At the time of Haydn’s famous trumpet concerto, the keyed trumpet was a novelty, unlike the natural trumpet which had no valves. Haydn was fascinated by the new instrument and was inspired to write the concerto. The evening’s soloist is Alexander Lindh, the orchestra’s principal trumpeter and member of Music in Uppland’s ensemble Linnékvintetten.
To reach a broader audience, Gabriel Fauré created an orchestral suite of “Masques et Bergamasques.” The work was written for the theater stage and commissioned by the Monte Carlo theater. The suite premiered in Paris in 1919 and is one of Fauré’s most popular works.
“Le Boeuf sur le Toit” – no, there’s no ox on the roof here, but Brazilian rhythms and tango! Composer Darius Milhaud’s humorous ballet music from 1920 concludes the evening.
