Program
Britta Byström: Love in the Afternoon
Maurice Ravel: Piano Trio in A minor
Franz Schubert: Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 100
Britta Byström, one of Sweden’s most played and acclaimed composers today. She has written several works directly for the Kungsbacka Piano Trio, such as the masterpiece “Love in the Afternoon” from 2017.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel’s birth in Ciboure, southwestern France. He moved to Paris as a young man, where he later became one of the most significant French composers of the 20th century. During his early childhood, he was influenced by the Spanish folk music played in his hometown, which can be sensed in his piano trio from 1914. A masterful chamber music work; it is ambitious, colorful, and lyrical.
Franz Schubert’s second piano trio is one of his last compositions. It premiered in 1828, shortly before his death at the age of only 31. Despite so few instruments, it is a magnificent masterpiece. The second movement, in particular, is well-known and has been used in a variety of films, documentaries, and TV programs. According to Schubert’s friend Leopold von Sonnleithner, the theme of the second movement was taken from a Swedish folk song, “Se solen sjunker” (See the sun is setting).
Kungsbacka Piano Trio’s recording of Schubert’s Op. 100 received rave reviews and was chosen by several newspapers as one of the best records of 2006.
