About the Performance

The beloved Håkan is turning 40, and his friends are preparing a surprise party for tomorrow, but the plans do not go as intended. At the same time, a group of young people are trying to find themselves and true love.

The Surprise is a play about suddenly losing control, about maturity, and about the longing for more love. Three parallel stories explore what one can demand of others and the personal journey toward becoming one’s best self.

Fyrisgården’s play The Surprise is the result of a collaboration between theater- and dance-interested young people with disabilities, professional cultural practitioners, and staff with extensive experience in performances driven by young people with disabilities. The ensemble consists of 25 young people between 13 and 30 years old. The performance has been made possible with support from Länsförsäkringar Uppsala through Kulturknuffen.

School Performance

The Surprise will also be performed as a school performance on Wednesday, May 27 at 10.00. To register for the school performance, email linnea.glassel@fyrisgarden.se with the number of tickets and participating school/day program/residence. Please also indicate any need for wheelchair seating.

Background of the Performance

The performance was created by young people with disabilities from Camp Fyrisgården, our open program. Together with director and theater leader Linnea Glassel, the young people developed the theater’s theme, scenes, and script. With the help of dance instructor Linnea Sahlin, they created dance choreographies for the play. Finally, singer, actress, and voice instructor Annika Bennsten worked on developing the stage performance with a particular focus on voice development. The set design was also created by young people at Fyrisgården with staff support, both by recreational youth not in the ensemble and by Fyrisgården’s art groups.

Collaboration

Through support from Kulturknuffen, Fyrisgården, together with Länsförsäkringar Uppsala, has given young people with disabilities the opportunity to create their own theater and thereby participate in culture on their own terms. The support has made it possible to hire professional leaders and carry out a public performance, which has strengthened the young people’s self-esteem, sense of community, and contributes to a more inclusive cultural life in Uppsala.
