About the Performance

Acclaimed singer and actress Fatoumata Diawara is one of the most powerful voices in West African music. Born in Côte d’Ivoire and raised in Mali, she has forged a unique sound rooted in Wassoulou, Afro-pop and soul. With her distinctive voice, lyrical expression and virtuoso guitar playing, she is a sparkling source of energy and innovation.

Diawara broke through in 2011 with the album Fatou and has since consolidated his position as a pioneering artist through a long series of strong records and collaborative projects with Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, Herbie Hancock, -M-, (Matthieu Chedid) and many more.

Following in the footsteps of Malian singer Oumou Sangaré, Fatoumata Diawara’s music weaves together personal stories with larger themes of women’s rights, identity, migration, always spiced with hope for the future. Je suis Mali! I am Mali!” she sings on her latest album Lamomali Totem, a song she wrote with -M-, Toumani Diabaté and Sidiki Diabaté.

When Fatou returns to Uppsala Konsert & Kongress, she will do so with her new album Massa, which will be released in March 2026. The dance floor is ready for a live artist who is renowned for a stage presence that is as magnetic as it is visually powerful.

We are proud to present one of Mali’s biggest!

Her grace and poise are completely at one. She sings as if she were telling a story – and means every word I don’t understand, but still feel in my bones. Johannes Cornell, DN 2016-10-10

A confidence that is evident in every movement and a way of owning the stage that produces great works with small means. Andreas Jakobsson, UNT 2015-03-19

UKK x Selam

Uppsala Konsert & Kongress continues to develop its program activities through collaboration with the music industry’s leading experts. Since 1997, the cultural organization Selam has successfully broadened Swedish cultural life with music from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and taken Swedish music out into the world. The UKK x Selam collaboration, which began in 2022, is a multi-year initiative with the aim of presenting three to four major concert experiences in Uppsala per year.

The collaboration has so far resulted in concerts with, among others, Polar Prize winners Angélique Kidjo (Benin) and Youssou N’Dour (Senegal), Ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), Brazilian superstar Marisa Monte and several of Cuba’s top salsa bands.
