Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 film City Lights with live music by the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra.
We return to the genius Charlie Chaplin, this time with the 1931 film City Lights, bearing the subtitle,
“A Comedy Romance in Pantomime”. Chaplin is behind most aspects: direction, production, and
the lead role. Conductor George Morton returns to lead the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra through this
musical film.

A Tramp in Love

Chaplin’s tragicomic character, the Little Tramp, meets a blind flower girl who mistakes him for
a rich man. The Tramp falls in love and tries every conceivable way to raise money to help
her. In City Lights, friendship and social hierarchy are not always as they seem. We enter a
world of disillusioned bourgeoisie, where a tramp is king and a blind girl is queen.

Narrative-Driven Music

The music, mostly composed by Chaplin, plays a crucial role in telling the story
and conveying emotions. Despite the advent of sound film, Chaplin once again chose to use sound technology only
for certain effects.

A Third Visit

After two successes and with fantastic precision, George Morton once again leads the Uppsala
Chamber Orchestra to the big screen. Since 2012, George Morton has established himself as one of Europe’s leading conductors for film with orchestra. In demand in the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia, George offers a wide range of film music, from early silent films to modern feature films.

Uppsala Chamber Orchestra

With a stylistic breadth ranging from grand symphonies to more intimate chamber music works, the
Uppsala Chamber Orchestra has performed live music for the county’s residents for over 50 years. The orchestra, of
many ansedd som en av Sveriges främsta, består av professionella musiker och har en omvittnad
varm och stor orkesterklang. Sedan 2007 ar hemmascenen Uppsala Konsert & Kongress, där man
även har familjekonserter och bjuder in skolklasser för studiebesök. De senaste åren har orkestern
gjort uppskattade gästspel i Estland, i konserthusen i Göteborg, Vara och Norrköping samt Artipelag
på Värmdö. Uppsala Kammarorkester ar en del av stiftelsen Musik i Uppland, en regional
musikorganisation i Uppsala med Region Uppsala som huvudman.
