About the Performance
The soon-to-be 45-year-old superstar Estrella Morente from Granada has long held an undisputed place in flamenco’s firmament. She grew up in its innermost circle – as the daughter of legendary singer Enrique Morente and dancer Aurora Carbonell – and made her stage debut at the age of seven. Since then, she has grown into one of the genre’s most influential voices.
With albums such as Mi Cante y un poema, Autorretrato and Leo, she moves freely between tradition and renewal – with one foot in Andalusian soil and the other directed toward flamenco’s future. A consistent feature of her work is a strong humanitarian message – clearly evident, for example, in her protest against gun violence.
She has collaborated with world-renowned names such as pop icon Peter Gabriel, guitar legend Paco de Lucía, and film director Pedro Almodóvar, and has been honored with accolades including the prestigious Spanish award Premios Ondas and several Grammy nominations.
The last time she visited UKK was in autumn 2014, in a concert that was recorded by Swedish Radio P2. Now she is finally back – with the same passion, power, and artistic brilliance as always.
UKK x Selam in collaboration with FlamencoFredag are proud to present this world artist to the Uppsala audience – as a warming light in the winter night and as hope for a brighter future.
