About the Performance

The soon-to-be 45-year-old superstar Estrella Morente from Granada has long held an undisputed place in flamenco’s firmament. She grew up in its innermost circle – as the daughter of legendary singer Enrique Morente and dancer Aurora Carbonell – and made her stage debut at the age of seven. Since then, she has grown into one of the genre’s most influential voices.

With albums such as Mi Cante y un poema, Autorretrato and Leo, she moves freely between tradition and renewal – with one foot in Andalusian soil and the other directed toward flamenco’s future. A consistent feature of her work is a strong humanitarian message – clearly evident, for example, in her protest against gun violence.

She has collaborated with world-renowned names such as pop icon Peter Gabriel, guitar legend Paco de Lucía, and film director Pedro Almodóvar, and has been honored with accolades including the prestigious Spanish award Premios Ondas and several Grammy nominations.

The last time she visited UKK was in autumn 2014, in a concert that was recorded by Swedish Radio P2. Now she is finally back – with the same passion, power, and artistic brilliance as always.
UKK x Selam in collaboration with FlamencoFredag are proud to present this world artist to the Uppsala audience – as a warming light in the winter night and as hope for a brighter future.

UKK x Selam

Uppsala Concert & Congress continues to develop its programming activities through collaboration with the music industry’s top expertise. The cultural organization Selam has since 1997 successfully broadened Swedish cultural life with music from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and has taken Swedish music out into the world. The UKK x Selam collaboration, which began in 2022, is a multi-year initiative with the goal of presenting three to four major concert experiences in Uppsala per year.

The collaboration has so far resulted in concerts with artists including Polar Prize winners Angélique Kidjo (Benin) and Youssou N’Dour (Senegal), ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), Brazilian icon Marisa Monte, Orchestra Baobab (Senegal), and several of Cuba’s finest salsa bands.

FlamencoFredag

FlamencoFredag strives to showcase both traditional improvisational flamenco and the more innovative, conceptual, and artist-specific. They are primarily a flamenco club with monthly events in Stockholm, and also conduct touring and educational activities throughout the country.

FlamencoFredag was awarded the prize for Organizer of the Year at the Folk & World Music Gala 2018 with the motivation: “Here is an arena, a vital meeting place that attracts professionals and amateurs, young and old with regular and high-quality programs. With knowledge and burning passion, one can go far, here with a passion as hot as the music and dance that flourishes on this stage.”
